BAT-3  reflection-focussed BAT

Description:Photograph of a focussed BAT-3 transducer.

The BAT-3 is a tightly-focussed BAT® transducer. Its unique design provides a diffraction-limited focussed beam with a spot size of less than ~600 µm Ø. The focal length of the BAT-3 is invariant with changing frequency, being fixed at a distance of ~9mm beyond the housing opening. Although the frequency bandwidth of the active element itself is much higher, the added path length along the reflective path yields an effective lower frequency response at the focal point (~600kHz bandwidth for sources; ~800kHz bandwidth for receivers). Both the source and receiver operate equally well in pulse, chirp or toneburst modes of operation, while the BAT-3 source can additionally be operated in pulse-echo mode. The MicroAcoustic BAT-3 has proven particularly useful for non-contact surface imaging and metrology applications at the surfaces of liquids or solids (see the in-air/reflection application page - example A.1.a ).

Typical beam profile:

Measured radiation pattern of a BAT-3 transducer under impulsive excitation
This beam profile was obtained experimentally for a BAT-3 source transducer under pulsed excitation. The ultrasonic beam emerges from the transducer at position (0,0), focuses sharply along axis at the 9mm design focal distance, and falls to a negligible value everywhere outside the tiny 600
µm Ø focal region. The on-axis depth-of-field is approximately 2mm.
